Do I need a license to prepare tax returns in Illinois?

Question:
Let's say I open a LLC and I want to prepare tax returns for individuals. Is a license needed or not?
What's the best way to open a LLC?

Answer:
You do NOT need any licensing or required education to prepare federal income taxes. The IRS does not require any registration or tracking of tax preparers, even though paid preparers must sign all returns & provide their tax ID (which can be a SSN if you are self employed--or you can get a personal tax id # if you don't want to put your SSN on returns).

HOWEVER, there are penalties for certain types of errors/omissions made by a tax preparer (from the IRS). So make sure you know what you are doing.

As far as Illinois, I cannot say. Call your local H&R Block & ask them if state certification is required they would know. My guess is that none is required.
