What's the best Homeowner's Insurance, HO-A or HO-W? |
Question: What's the best Homeowner's Insurance, HO-A or HO-W? Answer: These are the policy forms that only TX offers. The HO-A is the standardized Texas policy and these policies provide extremely limited actual cash value coverage of your home and its contents. Only the types of damage specifically listed in the policy are covered. From what I understand, State Farm is the only insurer who writes the HO-W policy form, and I don't know too much about it as I write for a different insurer. The HO-W policy is marketed as the best policy they write, which offers greater coverage than the HO-A, and additional coverages (such as mold) can be increased via endorsements. "Probably the biggest difference is the level of coverage for water damage to your home and the circumstances that would allow water damage to be covered and not covered is often the biggest difference. Water damage to homes is an all too common occurrence and an expensive problem to fix. Many homeowners are learning the hard way that where they once had broad coverage for water damage now they may have hardly any coverage depending on the nature of how the water damage occurred. With this said, flood coverage is always excluded in coverage as so many victims of Rita and Katrina are learning." I would recommend discussing further with a licensed agent familiar with these forms who could counsel you on the coverages to decide which is best for you. |
