Why is standard paper 8.5 x 11 inches?

Why is standard paper 8.5 x 11 inches?

Answer:
Not sure, but all of the paper sizes tie into each other. It has to do with filing. Fold a 11x17 in half, you get a 8.5x11...fold a 22x34 in half you've got 11x17, fold again 8.5x17.......you get the picture. Not sure where it all started though!
