What are the pros and cons of buying a franchise?

Question:
What are the pros and cons of buying a franchise?

Answer:
It depends. The franchises with the best brands tend also to be the most difficult to aquire. Top franchises may require that you have several hundred thousand dollars in net worth AND bring tens or hundreds of thousands to the table in franchise fees and startup costs. I'd strongly suggest you subscribe to, and religously read, INC magazine (www.inc.com) and Entrepeneur (www.entrepeneur.com). INC is more focused on the business side, while Entrepreneur tends to deal more in franchising and has a great web site for info on franchises. Obviously there's a lot of overlap between the two...but that's just my perpective. I've toyed with the idea of finding a franchise, but I don't like the business model from a franchisee's perspective. If you need a "franchise consultant" as some suggest, you probably shouldn't be getting into a franchise in the first place.
