how to find out if a brand name is already being used or copyrighted or trademarked?

Question:
I know of a good way which is to search the name on good search engines and check if its already in use, or check by searching for domain names from domain name services.
But is there a worlwide database of brand names that are legally registered, where I can find online? A more assuring way to find out if the brand name I just thought of is already being used by other people or organisations.

Or also to find out whether certain words or names are copyrighted, for eg; darth, galactus, etc...
